Following the Department For Education's decision to remove numerical levels to assess pupils' attainment and progress, it is now a requirement for schools to assess pupils' outcomes as having reached an 'expected standard'. Tests in reading and mathematics are undertaken by pupils in Years 2 and 6; for Year 2, these tests inform the overall Teacher Assessment. In Year 6, the results of the tests are published. In both Key Stages, outcomes in writing are assessed by Teacher Assessment only - there is no formal test.
